Rev EVAN JONES
Priest-in-Charge 1924-1928
Evan Telych Jones was born in Llandilo, Carmarthenshire in 1881. It has proved difficult to trace his early life, but by July 1910, he was in Rawmarsh, a village near Rotherham, Yorkshire. The Rotherham Advertiser of October 22nd 1910 has a report on the ordination of Evan Jones in the the Congregational Church of Rawmarsh where he had been "... appointed to take over the duties as pastor of the church in July." Evan had married Jessie Beynon (from Betws in Carmarthenshire) in early October, and they had returned from honeymoon for the ordination service. The following year's Census lists Evan and Jessie as residents of Rawmarsh and confirms Evan's occupation as "Congregational Minister".
However, it appears that Rev Jones left the Congregational Church and embraced Anglicanism. His entry in a 1930s edition of Crockford's Clerical Directory records that he trained at Lincoln Theological College (Scholae Cancellarii). He was ordained as a Deacon in May 1915 and was appointed as a Curate to St Luke's church in Grimsby (where he became a Priest the following year).
Rev Jones left Grimsby in 1918 and moved to the parish of Basingstoke where he served as a Curate for 10 years, the last 4 of which as priest-in-charge of All Saints' church. During this time he and his wife were residents of Church Square. He moved from Basingstoke in 1928 to become Vicar of Hedge End, Southampton. Newspaper reports at the time of this move recount that of his time in Basingstoke Rev Evan Jones was "...extremely popular in the parish and has done remarkably good work there".
He remained as Vicar at St John's, Hedge End until his retirement in 1951. He and his wife moved to New Milton afterwards. Rev Jones passed away in March 1956.
